The Defining Ten invites personalities from the creative arts to take us on a musical journey of the tracks which have been milestones in their lives.

These tracks will be played and discussed with our guest. The evening will end with an open Q&A and chance to chat with our guest afterwards.

On Thursday 25th April we welcome DAVID BALFE – member of beloved 80s band The Teardrop Explodes, as well as co-founder of Zoo Records and founder of Food
Records.

Dave was a key figure in the post-punk Liverpool music scene, joining Big In Japan with Bill Drummond, with whom he would found Zoo Records in 1978. Dave and Bill would go on to sign and manage Echo and the Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes, with Dave joining the Teardrops on keyboards after the release of their first single (which he produced). He would go on to play on all three of the Teardrop Explodes albums (co-producing their first), including their classic Top 10 hit,Reward.

After the band disbanded Dave moved to London, where he managed Strawberry Switchblade and Brilliant before founding Food Records. To which he would sign acts such as Zodiac Mindwarp, Voice Of The Beehive (both of whom he went on to manage), Crazyhead & Diesel Park West, before finding international platinum success with Jesus Jones.

However, it was a little band from Colchester called Seymour who would be Food’s biggest success, after Dave convinced them to change their name. Blur would go
on to become one of the iconic bands of the 90s and beyond. Dave also became the inspiration for their first no.1 hit, Country House.

After selling the Food label to EMI in 1994 Dave briefly stepped away from the music industry, but was sucked back in to become General Manager & Head Of A&R for the Columbia Label, part of Sony Music. There he played a part in the huge success of Kula Shaker.

Since then Dave has continued his diverse career branching out into creative writing and local politics amongst other things!

We are very excited to be bringing Dave to Worthing to listen to his choice of songs and the stories surrounding them, which will be followed by a Q&A.
