The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot-to-dot journey of the tracks that led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track that opened doors, the track that closed doors, a track that inspired and led to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, CD or streamed – and discussed with the artist. The evening will end with a unique performance and chance to meet the artist afterwards.

On Thursday 23rd November, we’re very excited to be bringing Miki Berenyi – an icon of 90s indie – to Worthing to discuss her Defining Ten.

Miki formed the band Lush in the late 80s with her school friend Emma Anderson. They signed to the massively influential independent label 4AD and went on to release three acclaimed and much loved albums: Spooky, Split and Lovelife, straddling the early 90s indie scene, where they were associated with the shoegaze genre, and into the mid-90s phenomenon of Britpop.

Following drummer Chris Acland’s tragic suicide in 1996, the band split and Miki took a break from music. Almost 20 years later, Lush reunited briefly, touring and releasing new music with the Blind Spot EP.

In 2018, Miki formed the new band Piroshka featuring guitarist Moose, Justin Welch (the drummer from Elastica) and Michael Conroy (the bass player from Modern English), releasing two albums on the beloved Bella Union label, run by Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins.

Last year, her autobiography ‘Fingers Crossed – How Music Saved Me From Success’ was released to huge critical acclaim, named as Rough Trade and Resident’s book of the year, and listed among the books of the year from Rolling Stone, Mojo and the Sunday Times.

The book was promoted with performances from The Miki Berenyi Trio, comprising Miki, Moose and guitarist Oliver Cherer, who have just finished a series of live dates supporting Gang Of Four, with plans for new material to come in 2024.

After discussing the Defining Ten songs of her creative life, Miki will be reading extracts from her memoir, which will be followed by a Q&A. There will be copies of ‘Fingers Crossed’ available for purchase at the event, and an opportunity to get copies (and anything else you fancy bringing along) signed by Miki.

Please note this is a ticketless event – you will need your order number/ email receipt to gain entry to the show.

Tickets are non refundable unless event is cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control

This event plants trees – for each ticket purchased we will plant one tree with #nomusiconadeadplanet
