The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot-to-dot journey of the tracks that led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track that opened doors, the track that closed doors, a track that inspired and led to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, CD or streamed – and discussed with the artist.

On January the 25th we bring Stephen Mallinder of the massively influential Cabaret Voltaire to Worthing.

Stephen Mallinder co-founded Cabaret Voltaire in his home city of Sheffield in 1973 and over a career spanning 20+ years released 13 albums across a variety of labels including Rough Trade, Virgin and EMI. Initially inspired by the work of Brian Eno their work consisted of DIY electronics, tape loops and Dada inspired performance art, before finding an audience in the post punk world. Their music would go on to inspire the techno and house sound of the 80s, as well as the industrial genre, with Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor citing them as a major influence. Across his career Stephen has also worked with notable names as Dave Ball of Soft Cell, Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Marshall Jefferson, Adrian Sherwood and Bill Nelson.

Following the split of the band and a relocation to Australia in the mid 90s he continued to make music, gained a PhD in music and popular culture, has presented radio shows and worked as a journalist and academic writer. Now back in the UK he continues to create music under his own name, Wrangler and Creep Show as well as running the Sound Arts and Digital programme at the University of Brighton, bringing his considerable experience and expertise to a new generation of musicians.

We are very excited at bringing Stephen to Worthing to listen to the songs and hear the stories around his Defining Ten, which we will follow with a Q&A session.
